Welcome to The Process Learning Company. I’m Monica Mynk, a veteran high school math and science teacher and college professor. I created Process Learning to help students work through difficult concepts using clear, manageable steps rather than disconnected rules to memorize. Here you’ll find practical teaching strategies, student support, tutoring information, and step-by-step resources for secondary math and science.

One of the most basic questions I ask myself in preparing content is "Can I go deeper?" If the answer to that question is yes, then I try to break the concept down further. Let's consider a simple example. Suppose you had never seen an apple before and you wanted to explain to someone else what it was. You tell them, "It's a red fruit, kind of round but not perfectly." They ask you, "What's a fruit?" You say, " A fruit is a seed-bearing structure that forms from the ovaries of a flowering plant." They say, "What are ovaries?" You say, "An ovary is the female reproductive organ in a flower." They say, "What does reproductive mean?"

In certain math conversations, it feels like these deeper dives could go on forever. How could a student possibly come to full understanding if they don't understand what all the terms in the process mean? It's critical to keep pausing and backing up until we find that starting point that will lead to success.
